John and I first jumped into a boat together 8 years ago in Nova Scotia. Four years ago we moved with our parents to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where we were able to sail and compete year round. In 2010 we went to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the 2011 i420 World Championships. It was our first international competition, we loved it and we gained invaluable experience.
After the world championship we were in our last semester of high school and too big for a youth boat. We were eager to switch into a bigger, more competitive boat and to balance both school and sailing on our own. We set our sites on the 49er; the fastest boat in the Olympics. So in the summer of 2011 we moved to Toronto, Ontario and bought a used 49er. We trained and competed full time during the summer and then headed off to university in the fall. We took our 49er to our first international regatta the winter of 2012 in Miami and as expected we found out just how good the top guys in the world actually are.
But our experience in Miami taught us. Over the summer we were able to cut our results in half, or better in all of our competitions, finishing the circuit in the top 5 in Canada. In September we went to Italy to compete in the 2012 49er European Championship, our biggest international competition to date. What an eye-opener, with 73 boats on the line and competitors from Ireland, Denmark, Germany and Sweden who had just represented their countries in the 2012 Olympic games. But we managed to get some really high results and we finished as top Canadian boat, a huge boost for us as a team moving forward.
This is where you come in, in order to get better we need to do more competitions like the one in Italy, and we need a boat in Europe to do it. We want to not only become the best in Canada but we want to compete on the world stage, qualify our country and take our boat to the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
We need $15,000 in order to pay half the cost of a new boat in Europe. This is essential to our campaign, as a new boat will provide us with the opportunity to race not just this summer but over the next three years as we push to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
Please share this with anyone and everyone you know, we have some awesome unique givebacks that will give you anything from a piece of the campaign to updates from around the world on how we’re doing. Memorabilia from our competition locations around the world and photos of us in competition are just the start. We’ve got some really unique givebacks. We’ll take one of our old training mains that we have since retired and make unique wallets for each of our supporters. Each one will be truly unique, each using a different piece of sail actually used in competition at home and abroad. This sail has helped push us to the next level, just as your donation will do, so this giveback is the perfect symbol, needless to say very useful as well, made of durable sail material! Of course the more you donate the better it gets. We’ll offer you the chance to get out on an Olympic class boat, teach you the ropes and generally go fast. Also got sailing lessons for you or your loved ones to really get the basics of sailing down, or if you feel like you’ve got the skills some real training sessions on our boat. Whatever you choose, you can be sure your donation is going to fund hard work and dedication, and you’ll become a valued member of the Ferguson Sailing Team.
Help Ferguson Sailing take on Europe and take on the world!
